In 1976, J. Ward Purrington, founding chairman emeritus of the Carolina Ballet, started from scratch to organize the company. Robert Weiss was hired as artistic director in 1997. Now, three seasons later, under Weiss's leadership, the Raleigh- based dance company has a world-class reputation.

North Carolina is a sailor's paradise. Inland lakes, sounds, Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic provide all types of sailing experiences. Novice sailors and master mariners can also hone their skills at a number of sailing schools, including the Water Ways Sailing School at Wrightsville Beach.

Randolph County at 790 square miles and 125,000 people of one of the state's largest counties. It is the sixth most industrialized county, with manufacturing accounting for 46 percent of the industry. The county boasts the nation's largest walk-through natural habitat zoo at Asheboro. Although large and forward-looking, the county preserves its history with Seagrove pottery, dating from the 1700s; the historic 1909 courthouse; and 1911 covered bridge in Union township, one of only a few remaining in the state.

Established in 1979, the N.C. State University College of Veterinary Medicine is the only veterinary school in the state. Ranked fifth in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, the school is known internationally for cancer research, cardiology, ophthalmology, and intensive care. Competition of admission is fierce, with only 73 chosen from 1,152 applicants for the 2002 graduating class.
