After serving the past fifty years as the company's top executive, John M. Belk, chairman and CEO of Belk, Inc., the nation's largest privately owned department store, will retire on May 26, 2004. Belk is the son of William Henry Belk, who founded the company in Monroe in 1888. Belk, Inc. operates 225 stores in fourteen Southeastern and mid-Atlantic states.

Craven Williams, president of Greensboro College, pushes himself and the college to be the best they both can be. Williams had twenty years experience as a college administrator when he came to the college in 1993. Since then he has raised over $50 million for the school; by 2013 he hopes to reach $100 million. Williams is featured in NORTH CAROLINA magazine's “executive profile.”

Acclaimed golf course designer Donald Ross created the Pine Needles Golf Course. After seventy-five years of play, the course was showing its age. Much discussion over many months led to the decision to restore the course as close to the original as possible. Brafford discusses the restoration process.

The North Carolina Golf Panel pairs with BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA to publish rankings of the state's top one hundred golf courses. In making their choices judges considered the course's conditioning, routing, design, strategy, memorability, fairness, variety and aesthetics. As it has since the panel began in 1995, Pinehurst No. 2 held the top position.

The scoring system includes such factors as conditioning, design, strategy, and memorability. Pinehurst No. 2 was rated Number 1 for the 18th straight year.
