Abstract:
Ben Owen III is a third-generation Seagrove potter, who knew at age twelve that he wanted to make pottery his career. Taught by his grandfather, Ben Owen, Sr., one of the state's best-known potters, Owen's creations are collected by many and exhibited in museums at home and abroad.

Abstract:
In 1965, the East Carolina University Poetry Forum started. The forum's mission was to bring creative writing to campus, and for the past forty years, poets of all persuasions have attended the twice monthly meetings to freely discuss their creations. Hundreds of students and others have come through the years. Peter Makuck, a distinguished writer, ECU English professor and adviser, has been the forum's director since 1977.

Abstract:
Few women attended college in the 1920s, but four sisters from Magnolia in rural Duplin County attended and graduated from East Carolina Teachers College during that period. They called themselves the “Magnolia Belles,” and a tradition was started. Over the following years at least one woman from each succeeding generation has graduated from East Carolina. In 2005, a member of the fourth generation earned her ECU diploma.

Abstract:
For almost 300 years an 18th-century shipwreck has rested on the ocean floor just off North Carolina's coast. Whether investigations confirm it to be Blackbeard's flagship, the QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE, or not, the wreck is a significant historical find discovered in 1996. Since then 16,000 artifacts have been brought up and sent to the QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE Conservation Lab at East Carolina University. A few, including the ship's bell, have been properly cleaned, restored, and readied for display, though many others continue to soak in sodium carbonate-filled conservation tanks and will for years.

In 1975, Wilson native Ronnie Barnes became the first graduate of East Carolina University's athletic training program. By 1980, he was the head athletic trainer of the New York Giants, an NFL team. Today he is vice-president of medical services for the team, making him the go-to man for player conditioning, rehabilitation, injury recovery, and overall health. He is not a medical doctor, but he heads a staff of physicians, athletic trainers, and specialists who work for him.

Lisa Rowland Callahan received her medical degree from East Carolina University in 1987. Today she is considered one of New York's best sports medicine doctors. She is the medical director of the Women's Sports Medicine Center at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, where she sees professional and recreational athletes. She is also director of player care for the New York Knicks NBA team and the New York Liberty WNBA team.

The Tar River Boys have played mountain music in their own lively style for the past forty years. An interesting feature of the group is the fact that none are from the state's mountains; all are from the flatlands of the eastern part of North Carolina. Tar River Boys released a CD in 2009 titled \"Bluegrass and More.\"

Hunt called upon her to head the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, which was rocked with scandal and burdened with inefficiencies. For years tobacco was life in eastern North Carolina, and today is no different. However, tobacco is paying the bills in a different way. To address chronic tobacco-caused health problems and improve life in formerly tobacco-dependent counties, tobacco companies provide funds to agencies such as the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund and the Golden LEAF.
