The 250th anniversary of Windsor’s founding yielded a three days’ celebration. Food and fun were offered by food trucks and carriage rides. Entertainment and enlightenment were provided in music by the Pocosin Band, historic homes tours, and visits to the “Back in the Day” museum.

Bill and Chris Barber, a Washington County couple, began their interest in local history while researching Col. Edward Buncombe of Buncombe Hall. They now do Revolutionary War reenactments and demonstrations from Williamsburg, VA, Guilford Courthouse, Brandywine Creek, DE, Germantown, PA to the Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City.

Bertie County farmers are farming for industrial hemp through a pilot program sanctioned by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The production of industrial hemp was made legal in 2015, as farmers are looking for alternative crops to grow. There is still much to learn about growing this new commodity, but industrial hemp may play a role in local farming’s future.

This article is a biography of Joe Cherry, born in 1929 to Joseph B. Cherry and his wife, Ethel Raymond. Joe's father, Joseph started the J. B. Cherry Insurance Company in Windsor, NC in 1912 and served as county treasurer. Joe went to UNC Chapel-Hill, was drafted into the Army, returned to UNC Chapel-Hill and came back to Windsor to continue the family business. His insurance office has been flooded four times from tropical storms and hurricanes,

The mystery around the Chowan River was two-fold: Lost Colonists of Roanoke Island; Dorothie, whose remains are believed discovered in Bennett’s Creek. Both parts of the mystery are examined in Don Upchurch’s In Pursuit of Dorothie, the Lost Colony Ship. Part investigation, part speculation, it explores a three-fold explanation for the two-fold mystery. The Dorothie transported the Colonists out of Roanoke, which means they survived beyond 1590, thus offering Croatan a meaning not related to death, but a new life.
