Abstract:
After a U.S. Department of Justice investigation brought up racial profiling charges, deportation cases have been dropped in Alamance County. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have dropped six cases since the report was presented on September 18th.

Orange County residents elected an all-female group of politicians to represent them in the N.C. General Assembly. These women include Senator Ellie Kinnaird, Representative Verla Insko, and Representative-elect Valerie Foushee and comprise the first all-female delegation representing Orange County. Despite success in Orange County, there are still only 39 women in the state legislature, that's just 23 percent.

Prestage Farms, located in Clinton, recently donated ten million dollars to North Carolina State University. Donated money will aid in maintenance and upgrades to the University's poultry science building. Accepting this donation is controversial after a 2012 reported on abuse and neglect of animals on the Prestage Farms.

Johnny's is a grocery store located a mile outside of downtown Carrboro. The establishment is cherished by some while reviled by other neighbors who complain about the noise disturbance when the store hosts live bands. Management continues to change and current managers will be out in December leaving this quirky store's future unclear.

In a recent report from the U.S. Department of Justice, the sheriff's office of Alamance County is alleged to have participated in racial profiling of Latino drivers. Arrests in traffic stops of Latinos were used to process individuals for deportation; these findings have led to re-examination of many immigration cases from Alamance County.

In an effort to reduce costs and raise money from an outside source NCDOT turned to private companies when creating new toll roads north of Charlotte. Along portions of I-77 in Mecklenburg County this corroboration between public and private firms created new fast lanes to try and bypass traffic on this busy stretch of highway. However, this project did not receive popular appeal from citizens.

Public health advocates are drawing attention to immigrants being denied access to mental health services in Orange and Chantham counties. The problem lies in the \"managed care organizations\" plan which distributes state funds to private providers. Specifically the provider for this area, Cardinal Innovations, is being scrutinized for possible denying or ignoring the health needs of immigrants within these counties.

Governor Pat McCrory released his 344 page budget mid-March which denied expansion of Medicaid coverage to state residents. The expansion funded by the federal Affordable Care Act would have helped 500,000 citizens backed by $521 million in federal funding. To counter this the governor approved $755 million in state funds for Medicaid but health care experts believe this is just a stop-gap measure without addressing core problems in the Medicaid system.

Since 1991 Orange County has proactively worked to reduce personal waste by 59 percent. Refinancing proposals could potentially weaken this successful program by privatizing the waste management program. Orange County's recycling efforts and reduction in waste production is the best among all other counties - Wake being the closest having reduced waste production by 25 percent in the same time period.

Chapel Hill councilwoman Penny Rich will resign in late November or early December leaving just two women representing Chapel Hill. The position will officially open in January 2013 and two individuals have already expressed interest; George Cianciolo, a Duke University associate research professor; and Maria Plame, a former teacher and state Board of Education member.

Town officials in agreement with Rosemary Village owner and builder Tom Tucker started a program in 2002 to reserve six units to be rented to low-income individuals. Specifically, low-income refers to individuals qualifying for the affordable housing under federal guidelines or earning below 80 percent of the area's median income. Tucker has now foreclosed on two of these units and plans to do so for the remaining four, claiming that he is operating these apartments at a personal loss.

House Bill 893 was introduced to the N.C. House last week by Rep. Rick Catlin (Republican from New Hanover County), Rep. Dana Bumgardner (Republican from Gaston County), and Rep. Chris Millis (Republican from Onslow/Pender Counties). If passed, the bill could have an immediate and negative affect on how the state's non-profits are funded, organized, and run.

Property owners in the southwest corner of the state are affected by an unsettled boundary dispute between North and South Carolina which stems from a 278 year old mapping error. A 15-year dispute between 125 affected property owners and both states may soon reach a resolution with a new Joint Boundary Commission formed to resolve the problem.

Sludge refers to a byproduct from wastewater treatment facilities deposited in a designated field on Grove Road in western Orange County. Resident Dot Watson and the Sewage Sludge Action Network have raised concerns about the adverse health effects related to exposure to these biosolids. The case is also being presented to Alamance County where three elementary schools located near such dumping sites.
