This article examines the first permanent colonies established in North Carolina and the settlement that became Beaufort. A look at the life and career of arts patron Robert Donaldson Jr., a Fayetteville native, longtime resident of New York, and proponent of architecture and landscaping. Donaldson's home, Blithewood-on-the-Hudson, was designed by his friend Alexander Jackson Davis, who he also recommended to design and landscape several buildings at the University of North Carolina.
