Forests atop Mount Mitchell are ravaged. Growth rates at lower elevations in many areas are slowing. Scientists are seeking an answer and industry experts are concerned. The forest and paper products industry is a $54.8 billion annual business, and the Southeast is the heartland. North Carolina ranks first in the Southeast in timber products and third in paper.

Algonquin Books operates out of a small, cramped building behind publisher Louis D. Rubin's house in Chapel Hill. The company's purpose is to publish quality books that showcase emerging Southern writers. In the past three years, fifteen titles have been published with seven more to be added this year. Rubin and his senior editor and cofounder Shannon Ravenel work without compensation. Although the company has a growing reputation, the economic life of a small press is perilous. To turn a profit, the company must publish 3,500 copies of a title.

Founded in 1937 and headquartered in Weldon, Coastal Lumber Company is the second largest privately held forest products company in the country, with annual sales of over $120 million. Coastal employs 1,500 at twenty production sites in nine states and owns 160,000 acres of timberland. International sales offices are located in Los Angles, Belgium, and Germany.

While many developers, local officials, and chambers of commerce worry about the construction market overheating, the boom continues around the state. Adams examines construction in the state's three largest markets which account for over half of the projects reported - Raleigh/Durham Research Triangle, Charlotte/Mecklenburg, and the Piedmont Triad of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point.

Thad Eure and his son Thad, Jr. both have staying power in their respective fields. Thad, Sr. was elected to the General Assembly in 1929, and in 1986 will celebrate his fiftieth year as NC Secretary of State. His son is a well-known Raleigh restaurateur who has operated a number of restaurants. The Angus Barn, which he opened in 1960, is the best-known.
