December 17 of this year celebrates the seventy-fifth anniversary of Wilbur and Orville's first flight at Kitty Hawk. Although their early flights garnered little attention, in 1905, the pair dismantled their plane pending a patent applied for in 1903. In 1908, the brothers returned to Kitty Hawk to continue flying. Wilbur traveled to France to showcase the flying machine while Wilbur remained in North Carolina and secured $30,000 from the United States Government for successful air flight. Over the next seventy-five years, dramatic changes would improve air travel.\r\n

Pinehurst was founded in 1895 by Yankee James Tufts. For Christmas one year, Tufts hosted a dinner for everyone who worked at the Holly Inn in Pinehurst. In 1897, the hotel guests gave a party for Tufts and his work force. \r\n

The 1979 Eno River calendar's theme is based on the Indians that once lived along the river's shores. The first written mention of these Indians was made by Francis Yardley in 1654. The calendar includes quotations from explorers and early settlers, as well as the names the Indians had for each month. Although 1972 and 1973 calendars are out of print, the other Eno River calendars can be purchased by mail.\r\n

The Nick Dalton House in Stokes County fed and lodged travelers of the nearby stage line. The house was nicknamed The Halfway House. In 1840, Dalton bought 3,000 acres of land to farm tobacco, build a flour mill, distillery, and a large general store. The success of the house along with the new business enterprises made Dalton a wealthy man and secured the same future for his children.

Smithfield and surrounding towns light over 22,000 candles each December 24th in the annual Christmas Eve Luminaria. Luminaries first originated in Spain and Mexico where tiny bonfires were used. The first Luminaria in Smithfield was organized in 1973 by the West Smithfield Community Development Organization.
