Shown on the opposite page [below] are two photographs of the Person-McGhee (AN) house that is located on the west side of US 1 north of Franklinton just south of Tar River. This house is located in a most attractive setting on a hill overlooking a valley to the east. It is owned today by Lemuel McGhee, grandson of the builder of the front section of the house.

This is another of those combinations of types of architecture, the front section being a flamboyant Victorian dwelling built onto the front of a two story Georgian or Federal dwelling. This is one of the two best examples of Victorian houses seen in the survey.

The older, rear section has been much altered and modernized to conform with the front, but still retains its double shoulder chimney, raised panel wainscot and beautiful modillion cornice. It was built on the usual hall and parlor plan. This early section is shown in the view on the lower part of the opposite page.

On the upper part of the opposite page we have a front view of the Victorian or Queen Anne style house showing the very fancy exterior woodwork that shows so plainly from the porch to the top. Everything is preserved and maintained in excellent condition, both interior and exterior. There are also a number of excellent outbuildings still in use.

The rear section is believed to have been built by Joe Person, noted for manufacturing and distributing a patent medicine, "Persons Remedy." This business was carried on by his wife in later years and was known as "Mrs. Joe Persons Remedy."
