Letter from J. G. Martin in the Adjutant General's Office to Captain Thomas Sparrow
Letter from J. G. Martin, Adjutant General's Office in Raleigh, N.C. to Captain Thomas Sparrow in Portsmouth, Ocracoke Inlet, N.C. At the top of the page is a copy of a letter from J.F. Hoke in the Adjutant General's Office that authorizes Sparrow to transfer any full companies stationed in Hatteras or Ocracoke with enough men who desire to enlist to the 9th Regiment of Volunteers stationed in New Bern by order of the Governor. At the bottom of the page a note from Martin says that the Governor directed him to revoke the above order. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
