- Photo of J. Y. Joyner (1862-1954), along with a dedication page, taken from the 1949 Techoan, which was dedicated to Joyner. A North Carolina native, Joyner served as Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1902-1919. He was the first ex-officio chairman of the East Carolina Teachers Training School Board of Trustees and was later a member of the board.
