Identifier: Historic Hope Plantation
Needlework fire screen (HOA 40" WOA 18 3/4") on a mahogany frame stand. Frame sides terminate in scroll-shaped tapering legs. Top and bottom of the frame have molded edges and are identically arched, as well as the stretcher below the screen. The silk needlework screen is mounted on wood stretchers and slides into the frame through a slot at the top. A brass ring is fixed at the top of the screen which can be used to lift the screen to a desired height. The fabric ground is worked with figures of exotic plants interlaced with a line pattern. Much of the color in the silk thread has faded and the linen backing has come loose to expose the stretchers in the rear. English, c. 1800.$http://digital.lib.ecu.edu/historyfiction/artifact.aspx?id=haodate: 1800-1820; creator:  more...
